Middle Fork Stables is Giving Back, One Ride at a Time in Lee County, Kentucky

Last Updated 3/31/2026

If you are spending time in the Red River Gorge or planning a spring getaway to Eastern Kentucky, there is a place just down the road where you can slow down, take in the scenery, and experience the mountains in a completely different way.

Located near Beattyville, Kentucky, Middle Fork Stables offers guided horseback trail rides through the rolling hills and wooded landscapes of Lee County. Just about 25 minutes from the Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge State Resort Parkarea in Slade, it is an easy add-on to any weekend trip or spring break adventure.

And this time of year, the timing could not be better. With spring breakers already visiting the Gorge, many are looking for something new to do between hikes, climbing, and cabin stays. A trail ride offers a slower pace and a chance to see the region from a whole new perspective.

A Different Way to Experience the Mountains

At Middle Fork Stables, the focus is simple. Safe rides, well cared for horses, and an experience that feels welcoming whether it is your first ride or your hundredth.

The trails wind through quiet woods, open stretches, and scenic overlooks that give you a feel for the land that defines this part of Kentucky. It is not rushed. It is not crowded. It is the kind of experience that lets you actually take in where you are.

For visitors staying in the Red River Gorge area, it is a chance to step outside the usual and try something memorable without going far.

More Than Just Trail Rides

What many people do not see right away is the work happening behind the scenes.

Middle Fork Stables also takes in a small number of rehab horses. These are horses that have come from difficult situations or were simply in need of a second chance. Some were neglected. Some were passed from place to place. Others were rescued by someone who could not leave them behind.

Here, they are given time, care, and training. The goal is to get them healthy, rebuild their confidence, and make sure they end up in the right long term situation.

It is not quick work, but it matters.

Turning Trail Rides Into Something Bigger

This spring, Middle Fork Stables is launching a new way to give back.

Each month, proceeds from gift card sales will go toward an equine related cause. That could be a horse rescue, a therapy program, or a rehabilitation effort making a difference.

For March, kept that support close to home. All proceeds from gift cards sold this month will go toward their current and future rehab horses. They are accepting suggestions for ways to give back for the month of April.

It is a simple idea, but one that allows visitors to be part of something meaningful while enjoying their time in the area.

A Little Extra for Spring Visitors

To make it even better, guests who purchase a gift card and book a one hour trail ride this month can add an extra 30 to 45 minute scenic loop on the Lookout Trail at no additional cost.

That means more time on the trail, more views, and more opportunity to enjoy the ride.

Why the Rides Are Walk Only

Most of the guests who visit Middle Fork Stables are not experienced riders. For many, it is their first time on a horse.

Because of that, the standard one, two, and three hour trail rides are walk only. This keeps the experience safe, relaxed, and enjoyable for everyone.

It also helps the horses. Horses do best with consistency. Keeping rides at a steady walking pace allows them to stay calm, reliable, and ready for each new group of riders.

For those with more experience, all day ride options are available and can be adjusted based on rider ability, trail conditions, and the horses selected for the day.

A Stop Worth Adding to Your Trip

With so many visitors already exploring the Red River Gorge this spring, Middle Fork Stables offers something a little different.

It is close enough to be convenient, but just far enough away to feel like you have found something new.

Whether you are planning a full weekend in the Gorge or just passing through, a trail ride in Lee County is an easy way to add another layer to your trip.

And now, it is also a way to give back.
